Reading Graydon Baker’s newly released book, The Guidebook to Killing Lions in Africa, I found it an exciting and fresh approach to biographical storytelling. The novel approach and 007-like experiences with mountains, lions, the indigenous population, his letters to Lukumay, and his application of these rare encounters to the Kingdom of God kept me on the edge of my seat. His enthusiasm and dedication for godly matters is exemplary for his years of service. Graydon attempted great things for God and expected great things from God—and he accomplished both. I look forward to reading his next book. This is a must read!

Graydon Baker’s language and flow of images gives one the sense of being in an adventurous video travelogue, not an easy safari. These moving stories take you into the humor, joy and tragedy of a very different world on the east coast of Africa. Baker and his friends, stumbling and bumbling never discount their serious mission of faith, always giving full story of their bone-crunching moments of near-death. His word skills are remarkable. The stories page turning. Pictures bold. Colors punctuate the story of life in adventure. This book you will savor. Learn from each new chapter a part of life most of us have never experienced. This book is simply one-of-a-kind. I read it with intrigue as to their journey, with joy at use of language and inspired by the witness of Christ in life, where ever it may be.

Just like the scriptures, Graydon has told us in graphic detail the good the bad and the ugly aspects of his incredible journey to Africa. His writing is insightful, his personality impulsive and demanding, and his leadership skills are perilously brave. His story is exciting, frustrating, absurd and exhilarating as he recalls in vivid detail the smells, the sounds, the challenges and the mysteries of Tanzania. He reveals the challenges of missions and of Mission Organizations and is never tempted to avoid the truth. He gives constant pre-eminence to the God he serves and is faithful as an ambassador of the Lord Jesus Christ. He identifies the unsung heroes that God chooses to impact this world and sees through the fallacy of ‘appointed’ leadership. He accepts, with some reluctance, that few are blessed with seeing and benefitting from the fruit of their labour. There is in this book a time to laugh, a time to fear and a time to reflect. Reading this book is a provocative experience of naked truth as well as a celebration of life, faith and the pursuit of personal fulfillment. Not bad for a former Gryphon!
