I highly recommend this book by Graydon Baker where he allows us as readers to join in as he shares with his son stories and learned lessons from a year of living and ministering in Africa. Graydon’s passion for adventure and for his love for Jesus and His mission led him into dramatic experiences where God proved His faithfulness. As I read this book, I was reminded of how God worked in similar ways through the life of Jacob. As a missions practitioner I would also recommend this book for missionary candidates to help understand the challenges and opportunities in dealing with cross-cultural differences. A very enjoyable and beneficial read!!

If anyone is wondering what the future of global ministry might look like, they need to get a hold of Graydon Baker’s “The Guidebook to Killing Lions in Africa” and give it a good read. Graydon is a 20-something young man who is passionate about Jesus, Africa and living life to the fullest. With insight far beyond his years, Graydon weaves often life-threatening personal experiences together with Biblical principles in a unique narrative that is part National Geographic, part travelogue, part parable and always interesting. He is brutally honest about the joys and frustrations of ministry, and doesn’t pull any punches about the failures and foibles of Christian ministries and individual followers of Christ, himself included. Every young person who is considering serving the Lord cross culturally ought to read this book. In fact, every Christian ought to.
— Bob Beasley, VP International Ministry – Bible League Canada
Graydon Baker represents the rare voice that crops up in every generation to provoke and challenge people to take hold of a vibrant mission with boldness, a touch of recklessness, and deep conviction that God is in charge. The Guidebook to Killing Lions in Africa is a riveting recall of Graydon’s year of service in Tanzania. Faced with personal, political, and cultural challenges, he is brought to the highs and lows of his faith while climbing mountains, confronting lions, dancing with Masai warriors, and discipling university students in a context of deep systemic resistance. One of the most honest and inspiring books you will ever read!
— Shelley L. Campagnola, Executive Director – Kids Alive International Canada
The Guidebook to Killing Lions in Africa is a must read for anyone considering serving in another culture. Graydon’s story of the unexpected reminds us that life is an adventure when we dare to be obedient to God’s call. Near death mishaps on mountains, wild lion encounters and political unrest against the backdrop of God’s love and human need keeps the reader glued to the book. I read the book in one sitting!
